A beam in one's eye is a paraphrase from the New Testament which has generated thought within Christian Platonism.

As a verb, "to wrench" means to pull or twist, which might elicit a defensive reaction; while as a noun, "a wrench" is a tool to tighten things.

Regimental flags or standards, used in rallying-cries, are sometimes known as the colors.
