Where does the word "fragile" come from?
"Fragile" as an adjective meaning "liable to break" comes from the Latinfrangere, "to break," appearing in the 1510s, though its original meaning is "liable to sin." The OED lists 4 different meanings for the word - all adjectives, while describing one as a "quasi-noun." This noun form, when used in the plural, acquires the meaning "delicate objects" in 1882. The original adjectival meaning becomes obsolete by 1548. The earliest written use of the adjective is in the writings of Henry Bradshaw, hagiographer, scholar, and poet. Links.NightCafe Image Source
