Where does the word "venom" come from?
"Venom" comes from the Latinvenenum "poison, drug, seduction," appearing in English in the mid 1200s. The meaning "virulent language" appears around 1300. The OED lists a verb form appearing around 1330 in Sir Tristrem. It is the archaic form of the word "evenom." In the Middle Ages physicians believed that like expelled like, and thus venom antidotes were concocted from the flesh of vipers. Links.NightCafe Image Source
