Where does the word "adept" come from?

"Adept" as an adjective meaning "completely skilled" comes from the Latin ad, "to," and apisci, "to grasp or attain," appearing in the 1690s according to etymonline, though the oxford english dictionary lists the earliest use as 1650. The noun derives from it and appears in the 1660s, meaning "an expert." The OED lists 4 different meanings for the word - 2 adjectives and 2 nouns. In each case, the earlier meaning is specific to expertise in the realm of the occult, while the later meaning is more general. The earliest written use of the noun is in 1673, in Cooper's translation of Helvetius's "Golden Calf," while the earliest written use of the adjective is in 1650, in the writings of Thomas Vaughan, alchemist and philosopher.
