Where does the word "longing" come from?
"Longing" as a noun meaning "a yearning" comes from Old Englishlangung, "weariness or sadness," which itself comes from the Old English verb langian "to grieve for," but which literally means "to grow long or lengthen." The adjective also derives from that verb. The OED lists 8 different meanings for the word - 5 nouns and 3 adjectives. Obsolete meanings for the noun include "a delay" and "something which belongs to something else," and similarly the adjectives used to mean "that grows longer" and "that forms a part of something."
