Is "clouds" a noun or a verb?

"Clouds" comes from Old English clud "mass of rock, hill." and is both a noun and a verb. The noun's meaning of "a mass of visible evaporated water" first occurs around 1300, while the verb's meaning of "to render dim or obscure" is from the 1510s. Used as a noun, one can envision a colon after it : "inky clouds : the atmosphere..." in which case the rest of the poem has the flavor of a haiku, where the clouds and the atmosphere are being compared as equal or similar; used as a verb, the poems suggests that "something inky" is rendering the atmosphere dim, and thus that one is affecting the other. I prefer to leave punctuation out of my poems for the express purpose of allowing alternative interpretations to exist simultaneously.
