Where does the word "adult" come from?
"Adult" as an adjective meaning "mature, or grown" comes from the Latinad, "to," and alere, "to nourish," appearing in the 1530s. It gains the meaning "mature in outlook" in 1929, and comes to mean "pornographic" in 1958 (though the oxford english dictionary claims this happens as early as 1943). The noun form meaning "an adult person" derives from the adjective, appearing in the 1650s. The OED lists 11 different meanings for the word - 8 adjectives, 2 nouns, and 1 verb. The verb form meaning "to act like an adult" appears in 1909. The earliest written use of the word is in 1531, in the writings of Thomas Elyot, diplomat and humanist. Links.
