Where does the word "grin" come from?
"Grin" as a verb meaning "to bear the teeth in a smile" comes from Old Englishgrennian, "to show teeth in pain or anger," appearing in the late 1400s. The noun derives from it and appears in the 1630s. The OED lists 12 different meanings for the word - 5 nouns and 7 verbs. Obsolete meanings for the noun include "a snare, noose, or halter;" the obsolete verb is "to catch in a noose or choke."
