Where does the word "heather" come from?
"Heather" is of uncertain origin, but is perhaps from the Celtic. It appears in the early 1300s as hathir in Scotland and the north of England for the plant Calluna vulgarisand is listed in the Compotus Procuratoris de Norham of 1335. Farmers regarded heather to be an indication of poor soil, according to a Welsh proverb which associates it with starvation. Links.NightCafe Image Source
