Where does the word "lining" come from?
"Lining," as a noun, meaning "the stuff with which garments are lined,"
comes from the Old English līn "flax, linen thread," though that word itself may be an early
borrowing from Latin linum, "flax or linen." In 1611, "lining" referred to
the copulation of dogs.
