Where does the word "skin" come from?

"Skin" as a noun meaning "an animal hide" comes from Old Norse skinn, which has the same meaning, appearing around 1200. The verb form "to remove the skin from" derives from the noun form, appearing in the late 1300s. The OED lists a whopping 42 different meanings for the noun 'skin' and 31 different meanings for the verb, which first appears in verb form in Lanfranc's Science of Cirurgie. One of the verbal meanings is "to drive on or urge, as with a whip." Addison uses the verb in the sense of "to cover over artifically" in his Remarks on Italy (search for 'skinned').
