Where does the word "palm" come from?

"Palm" comes from the Latin palma, "the inner surface of the hand; the flat end of an oar; a palm tree." The OED lists 34 different meanings for the word - 20 nouns, 13 verbs, and 1 proper noun. The proper noun, considered obsolete, is the name of a white wine from Palma. Other obsolete uses for the noun include "the branch of a tree," "a pre-eminent person," and "the hand of a clock." Obsolete uses of the verb include "to win a trick in cards by cheating," "to play a trick upon," and "to bribe." Current meanings for the noun include "a type of shrub or wood; the leaf of a palm tree; a victory or prize; the length of a hand; and the sole of a human foot." Current meanings for the verb include "to conceal; to steal; to shake hands with; to strike with the hand; and to climb by gripping with the hands and feet." The earliest written use of the noun is around 1300, in one of the harley manuscripts known as St. Edmund Rich; the earliest use of the verb, in 1671, is in a text co-written by Richard Head, writer, and Francis Kirkman, bookseller.
