Where does the word "star" come from?
"Star" comes from Old Englishsteorra "a fixed celestial body." Etymonline claims that the verb form meaning "to perform the lead part" in reference to actors first appears in 1824; however, the oxford english dictionary traces this use of the word to the writings of Robert Greene in 1591, though I could not find evidence of this. An obsolete form of the noun meaning "a crack or fissure in the skin" is used by Edward Topsell in his 1607 book The History of Four-Footed Beasts, though that could be a misprint for the word 'scar.'
