"litoreus" is a direct borrowing from the Latinlitoreus "of the seashore." Its use is mainly in scientific taxonomy and has been used in the naming of the Saint Simon Island Raccoon (Saint Simon is an island off the US coast of Georgia), the skull of which was entered into the United States National Museum in 1856, as well as a type of marine worm identified in 1983.
