Where does the word "flourishing" come from?
"Flourishing" comes from the Latinflos, "a flower." The OED lists 13 different meanings for the word - 7 adjectives and 6 nouns. The noun form meaning "a blossom" becomes obsolete by 1513, while the adjective form meaning "vibrating" (said of a spear) is no longer used by 1425. Current meanings for the noun include "a thriving or prospering; a flower-like design; an ornamental covering; and the excrement of a deer (i.e. fumishing)." Current meanings for the adjective include "verdant; eminent; vigorous; grandiloquent; and ostentatious." The earliest written use of the noun is in 1303, in the writings of Robert Mannyng, historian and poet; of the adjective, before 1340, in the writings of Richard Rolle, religious writer and hermit.
