Where does the word "quiver" come from?
"Quiver" comes from Old Englishcwic "alive" when used as a verb. The eventual meaning "to tremble or shudder" occurs by the 1400s. When used as a noun it comes from the Old English cocur around 1322, and has always meant "a case for holding arrows." Samuel Ayscough, in his 1790 work "An Index to the Remarkable Passages and Words Made Use of by Shakspeare" counts the word "quiver" being used five times, once as an adjective.
