Where does the word "grasp" come from?
"Grasp" appears first as a verb meaning "to reach, grope, or feel around" in a 1382 translation of Wycliffe's bible. It then appears as a noun by the 1560's, meaning "a handle;" by the 1680s it is used in the sense of a "power of intellect." The ultimate derivation is unclear beyond the Middle Englishgraspen (also spelt grapsen). In 1650, as a noun, it could also mean "twilight;" and by 1867 it was a nautical term meaning "handle of an oar." Links.NightCafe Image Source
