Where does the word "caution" come from?
"Caution" as a noun meaning "a pledge or guarantee" comes from the Latincavere, "to be on one's guard," appearing around 1300. The verb meaning "to warn" comes from the noun, appearing in the 1640s. The OED lists 18 different meanings for the word - 13 nouns and 5 verbs. The noun form acquires the meaning "a bond" in 1390 (now obsolete), "a word of warning" in 1616, "money" in 1830, and "a person who causes amusement, astonishment, or alarm" in 1834. The earliest written use of the noun is in 1297, in the manuscript Robert of Gloucester's Chronicle.
