Where does the word "smile" come from?
"Smile" as a verb meaning "to make a facial expression indicating happiness" comes from Middle Englishsmilen, meaning the same thing, appearing around 1300; sources earlier than this are uncertain. The noun form meaning "the facial expression indicating happiness" derives from the verb around 1450. The OED lists 20 different meanings for the word - 15 for verbs and 5 for nouns - but the differences between most of them are quite subtle. One obsolete meaning of the noun is "a drink of whisky" and as a verb is "to take a drink" or "sparkle like wine." The verb first appears in Cursor Mundi, a Northumbrian poem of the 14th century.
