Where does the word "dwindle" come from?
"Dwindle" as a verb meaning "to shrink or diminish"
comes from Old English dwinan, "to waste away or vanish," appearing in the 1590s. The OED lists
7 different meanings for the word - 2 nouns and 5 verbs. The noun form acquired the meaning "the process of dwindling" in 1779, and "a shrunken object" in 1847. An obsolete meaning for the verb is "to shrink in fear." The
earliest written use of the noun is in 1779, in the writings of
Samuel Johnson, lexicographer;
of the verb, in 1598, in the writings of
William Shakespeare.
