Ruminations.
Where does the word "rugged" come from?

"Rugged" as an adjective meaning "having a rough or hairy surface" is of uncertain origin, but probably comes from either Old English or Scandinavian, appearing around 1300. By the 1650s it means "stony or broken" when in reference to the ground; when in reference to things made by man, "strongly constructed" appears in 1921. The meaning "vigorous" occurs in 1847. The OED, which gives different dates for all of the previous definitions, lists 18 different meanings for the word - 16 adjectives, 1 adverb, and 1 verb. Obsolete forms include "rough-coated" in reference to horses (this meaning is dead by 1888); "wrinkled" in reference to the forehead (dead by 1847); the verb form "to make rugged," which appears in literature only once, in 1628; and the adverb "harshly, unevenly" (dead by 1821). The adjective can also mean "covered with rugs" (1888), though that form has a different etymology. The earliest written use of the adjective is around 1330, in the manuscript known as Arthour and Merlin.
