Where does the word "breathe" come from?
"Breathe" as a verb meaning "to inhale or exhale" derives from the English noun "breath" which then comes from Old Englishbræð, "odor, exhalation," appearing around 1200. The OED lists 30 different meanings for the word - all verbs. Obsolete meanings include "to evaporate," (1300), "to give a person vigorous exercise," (1425), "to aspire to do something," (1524) and "to play a wind instrument." (1718) Other meanings include "to give off an odor" (1500), "to produce or send forth" (1532), "to be suggestive of something" (1697), and "to relax" (1616).
