Where does the word "earth" come from?
"Earth"
comes from Old English eorþe "ground, dirt, country, the abode of man." It started to be used as the name of our planet around 1400. It can also be used as a verb to mean "to bury a corpse." See Leo's 1886
The Wars of Alexander : An Alliterative Romance Translated Chiefly from the Historia Alexandri Magni de Preliis for many uses of this word, spelled "Erd," "Erde," "Erthe," "Erþed," etc.
An obsolete use of the noun means "the action of ploughing."
