"Spirit" comes from the Latinspirare "to breathe" and as a noun meant "breath of a god, i.e. life itself; vigor; courage" in that language. The eventual meaning "divine substance; soul" occurs by the late 1300s, while the meaning "supernatural being" is from the middle of that century. "State of mind" is from 1600. In late 1300s in alchemy it denoted a "volatile substance," and from that source acquired the meaning of "alcoholic liquor" by the 1670s. Links.NightCafe Image Source
