Where does the word "haunting" come from?
"Haunting" as an adjective meaning "so as to haunt one's thoughts" comes from Old Frenchhanter, "to frequent or indulge in," appearing in the late 1300s. The OED lists 16 different meanings for the word, though 13 of them are compounds with other words. The noun version can mean either "practice, exercise" or "visitation by fears."
