Where does the word "substance" come from?

"Substance" comes from the Latin sub "up to, under" and stare "to stand." The eventual meaning "essence" occurs by the 1100s, while the meaning "material wealth" is from the 1300s. "Meaning expressed by speech or writing" (as opposed to style) is from the 1780s.
