Where does the word "idol" come from?

"Idol" as a noun meaning "image of a god to worship" comes from the Greek eidos, "form, shape," appearing around 1250. The OED lists 41 different meanings for the word. The only verb form means "to worship or revere," appearing in 1565 in the writings of James Calfhill, clergyman. Robert Louis Stevenson uses the noun with its rare meaning "a visible but intangible image" in Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll & Mr. Hyde (1886).
