Where does the word "remember" come from?

"Remember" comes from the Latin re, "again" and memor, "mindful." The OED lists 36 different nuanced meanings for the word - all verbs. Obsolete meanings include "to mention" and "to remind." Current meanings include "to recall to mind," "to mention in one's prayers," and "to convey good wishes." The earliest written use of the verb is around 1350, in the manuscript known as Apocalypse St. John: A Version (i.e. Harley MS. 874). When used with a dash (i.e. "re-member"), the earliest written use is in 1855, in the writings of Herbert Spencer, sociologist and philosopher.
