Where does the word "sapphire" come from?
"Sapphire" comes from the Greeksappheiros, "a type of blue precious stone." The OED lists 10 different meanings for the word - 9 nouns and 1 adjective. Current meanings for the noun include "a precious stone of transparent blue; a pure bright blue; a stylus for gramophone records; a type of hummingbird; and a type of mink with blue fur." The meaning of the adjective is "resembling the sapphire or sapphire-colored." The earliest written use of the noun is from before 1272, in the manuscript known as Luue Ron, a book of erotic mysticism written by Thomas de Hales.
Apparently, lapidaries from the Renaissance claim that the sapphire stone can cure anger and stupidity. Links.
