It is derived from Old English "þorn" meaning "a shrub, plant, or tree with sharp points on the branches or stems."

The Old English word þȳ means, among other things, "therefore; because; since; then." The first letter of this word is, of course, known as a "thorn." This character also exists in Old Swedish.
